blogger-award

Shanannigans over at Reads and Reels rather kindly nominated me for this and truth be told I am absolutely honoured and flabbergasted!  I never expect to be part of these things, it still amazes me that so many of you read my ramblings and are so lovely to comment too.

Here are the award rules:

1. Thank the blogger who nominated you and provide a link to their blog.
2. Write a post to show your award.
3. Give a brief story of how your blog started.
4. Give two pieces of advice to new bloggers.
*5. Select 15 other bloggers you want to give this award to.
*6. Comment on each blog and let them know you have nominated them and provide the link to the post you created.

How “The Quiet Knitter” started

The Quiet Knitter was really just a way for me to share my love of books and my thoughts on the ones I had read with more people.  I regularly chat with friends and family about books, giving recommendations on new books and old books that I think they might like.  An online friend suggested that I start a blog to ‘collect’ all of my ramblings and could then share it with people…after much convincing I dipped my toe into the world of blogging and haven’t looked back….yet!

Advice to New Bloggers

Since I’m a book blogger these are really geared towards fellow book bloggers but you can take from it what you wish and apply it to yourself…

Be honest – if you don’t like a book then be honest and tell the author/publisher.  Don’t just leave a “didn’t like this” comment, explain why.  Was it perhaps poor formatting in an electronic review copy you received that made it difficult to read?  Did you feel that you couldn’t connect with the characters?  Was this book one you struggled to get into – was the beginning to slow for you?  Did the book turn out not to be what you expected from the blurb?
If you can be constructive an author/publisher will appreciate that.  Not every person will like every book, books are like marmite….love them, hate them.

Don’t feel you have to accept every review request – I’m sure most bloggers have been in that position, especially when starting out.  It’s hard to say no, believe me, I still struggle.  Hence why I have a note on my “about me” page saying I cannot take review requests at the moment (I struggle to say no and am now victim to a ridiculous reading pile!).
Equally, if a request is made and it’s a book that really isn’t something you would read then just say no.  Explain that this falls outside of your interest area, and although you are flattered/honoured to be asked, unfortunately it would be unfair on both parties to take this one one.

Connect with  other bloggers – this is the main one for me.  There are other people out there doing what you are doing, writing a blog about something and putting their heart and soul in to their posts.  Most blogging communities are full of likeminded people who don’t mind answering questions, we all started somewhere.  I know that the book blogging community is made up of some of the most wonderful people I’ve “met”, no question is too silly to ask, always someone around to offer support or virtual hug.

* I’m supposed to tag 15 bloggers, but I know that most of them will be up to their eyes in reviews just now (there are far too many good books coming out on the next few months and us lucky things are getting to read them early – you’re in for a treat!).

So instead, I’ll offer you the names of 15 blogs and  their bloggers to check out:
